Sept 1, 2010:

Aniket Kate joins the institute as a postdoctoral researcher. Aniket received his PhD from the University of Waterloo. Aniket will be working with Michael Backes and the Information Security and Cryptography group.

 

August 31, 2010:

Boris Koepf, a postdoctoral researcher with the Security and Cryptography group, is joining IMDEA-Software as an Assistant Research Professor (tenure-track). Meeyoung Cha, a postdoctoral research with the Networked Systems group, is joining KAIST as an assistant professor. We wish them both the best on their future endeavors.

 

August 27, 2010:

Joshua Dunfield joins the institute as a postdoctoral researcher. Joshua received his PhD from Carnegie Mellon University. He joins us from McGill University in Montreal, where he held a post doc position with the Computation and Logic Group. Joshua will be working with Umut Acar and the Programming Languages and Systems group.

 

August 26, 2010:

Istemi Ekin Akkus joins the institute as a doctoral student. Ekin conducted his undergraduate studeis at Koc University in Turkey, and he has Master's degrees from Koc and from the University of Toronto. Ekin will be conducting his graduate research under the supervision of Paul Francis.

 

August 24, 2010:

Anjo Vahldiek joins the institute as a doctoral student. Anjo joins us from the University of Saarland graduate school. As an intern at IBM, Anjo has worked on programming patterns and automated distributed query exercution for Informix. Anjo will be conducting his graduate research under the supervision of Peter Druschel.

 

August 5, 2010:

Scott Kilpatrick joins the institute as a doctoral student. Scott received his master's and bachelor's degrees from the University of Texas at Austin. As an intern in the Sun Labs Programming Languages Research Group, Scott has been working on the type system of the Fortress programming language. Scott will be conducting his graduate research under the supervision of Derek Dreyer.

 

July 29, 2010:

MPI-SWS graduates its fifth PhD student -- Ansley Post. Ansley's dissertation focused on the development of an autonomous system for data management on personal devices. Ansley will be moving to Zurich, where he has accepted a position at Google.

 

June 16, 2010:

Andreas Haeberlen has been awarded the 2009 Otto Hahn Medal for outstanding scientific achievement. The medal, and its accompanying monetary prize, will be presented to Andreas at the Max Planck society's annual General Assembly in Hannover on June 16.

 

Summer/Fall 2010:

Advait Alai (IIT Madras), Jisun An (KAIST, Korea), Aastha Metha (BITS, Pilani), Alejandro Gutierrez (U of Illinois), Carolyn Hafernik (Penn State), Soudeh Ghorbani Khaledi (University of Toronto), Ankit Malik (IIT Delhi), Rafael Pasquini (University of Espirito Santo do Pinhal), Roly Perera (University of Birmingham), Tiago Rodrigues de Magalhaes (Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil), Vinay Surana (IIT Bombay), and Vivek Surana (IIT Bombay) visit the institute for summer/fall internships.

 

Summer 2010:

Robert Harper has been appointed as the institute's first external scientific member. Dr. Harper is a Professor of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University, where he conducts research on programming language design and implementation. Bob will be visiting the institute in Summer 2010.

 

May 26-28, 2010:

The institute held its second, bi-annual retreat at the Schloss Dagstuhl. Activities included work-in-progress talks by all students and post-docs, slide karaoke, open mic sessions devoted to academic issues and institute life, birds-of-a-feather sessions on the future of cloud computing and verification, and a discussion of how to make the most of being a grad student / post doc, as well as social activities like bike rides, volleyball, a violin/guitar jam session, charades, and a hike to nearby ruins.

 

Apr 30, 2010:

The institute is very pleased to welcome Zartash Uzmi as a visiting researcher. Zartash Uzmi graduated with a PhD from Stanford in 2002, and is currently Associate Professor at the Lahore University of Management Sciences in Pakistan. He is doing a sabbatical at the institute, and will be with us through December. Dr. Uzmi will be accompanied by his Master's student, Ahsan Tariq. They will be collaborating with Paul Francis on scalable global routing protocols.

 

April 14, 2010:

Fabrico Benevenuto, a graduate student at the Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil, is visiting the institute for one month.

 

April 12, 2010:

The institute is very pleased to welcome Siva Ram Murthy, head of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at IIT Madras. Prof. Murthy will spend 2 months at the MPI-SWS.

 

March 19, 2010:

Meeyoung Cha, Hamed Haddadi, Fabricio Benevenuto, and Krishna Gummadi's work on measuring user influence in the Twitter network has received media coverage from the New York Times and popular technology blogs.

 

March 12, 2010:

Alan Mislove, Bimal Viswanath, Krishna P. Gummadi, and Peter Druschel's work on inferring user profiles in online social networks has received media coverage from Slashdot.

 

January 18, 2010:

Umut Acar joins the institute as a faculty member. Umut will lead an independent research group on Programming Languages and Systems. He obtained his Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University and joins us from the Toyota Technological Institute at Chicago.

Matthew Hammer and Yan Chen are doctoral students advised by Umut Acar at the Toyota Technological Institute of Chicago. They will continue their research at the MPI for Software Systems. Yan received his master's degree from Portland State University and his bachelor's degree from Fuzhou University. Matthew Hammer received his bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin.

 

January 15, 2010:

Luis "Beta" Ziliani joins the institute as a doctoral student. Beta obtained his Master's degree from the University of Buenos Aires, and will be conducting his graduate research under the supervision of Derek Dreyer.

 


2009

 

December 21, 2009:

Andrey Rybalchenko is leaving the institute to become a Professor of Theoretical Computer Science at TU Munich. Andrey will be accompanied to Munich by his group: Ashustosh Gupta, Ruslan Ledesma Garza, Corneliu Popeea, and Juan Antonio Navarro Perez. We wish them all the best on their future endeavors.

 

November 4, 2009

Bill Hogan joins the institute's administrative staff. Bill joins the institute from Cornell University, where he held an administrative position in the computer science department.

 

October 28, 2009

Pramod Bhatotia joins the institute as a doctoral student. Pramod obtained his bachelor's degree at Sardar Patel University, and his Master's at IIT Kanpur. He subsequently worked at IBM Research India. Pramod will be conducting his graduate research under the supervision of Rodrigo Rodrigues.

 

August 25, 2009

Ruichuan Chen joins the institute as a postdoctoral researcher. Ruichuan joins us from Peking University in China. He will be working with the large scale internet systems group.

 

August 10, 2009

Cheng Li joins the institute as a doctoral student. Cheng joins us from Nankai University in China. He will be conducting his graduate research under the supervision of Rodrigo Rodrigues.

 

August 6 2009:

Paarijaat Aditya joins the institute as a doctoral student. He completed his undergraduate studies at Delhi College of Engineering, and for the past three years he has been working at Adobe Systems, India. Paarijaat will be conducting his graduate research under the supervision of Peter Druschel.

 

July 23, 2009

Bin Cheng joins the institute as a postdoctoral researcher. Bin joins us from Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST). For his dissertation, Bin developed a P2P-assisted VoD system called Gridcast that has seen considerable use. Bin will be working with the large scale internet systems group.

 

July 17, 2009:

Rotem Oshman, a graduate student at MIT, is visiting the institute for one month.

 

May 21, 2009:

Congratulations to Meeyoung Cha, Juan Antonio Navarro Perez, and Hamed Haddadi. Their paper "Flash Floods and Ripples: The Spread of Media Content through the Blogosphere" was selected as the ICWSM'09 best paper using the Spinn3r dataset. The winning paper was selected out of all papers in the main conference and the data challenge workshop that used the 2009 Spinn3r blog dataset.

Congratulations to Ashutosh Gupta and Andrey Rybalchenko, for winning the best paper award at ETAPS'09! The award goes to the best contribution in the area of programming languages among the CC, ESOP, and TACAS conferences (which are all part of ETAPS, the European Joint Conferences on Theory and Practice of Software).

 

February 1, 2009:

Nuno Lopes, a master's student at the Technical University of Lisbon (UTL), is visiting the institute for six months. He is exploring possible topics for his master's thesis in the area of compiler optimizations, declarative networking, and applications.

Meeyoung Cha joins the institute for an extended research visit. Meeyoung has obtained her Ph.D. in computer science at KAIST in Korea. She conducts research on network architecture (particularly IPTV and VoD), information dissemination in online social networks, and statistical analysis of content popularity and its implications

 

February 1, 2008:

Pedro Fonseca joins the institute as a doctoral student. He did his undergraduate studies at the Technical University of Lisbon, Portugal. Pedro will be conducting his doctoral research under the guidance of Rodrigo Rodrigues.

 

January 6, 2008:

Nuno Santos joins us a doctoral student. Previously, he obtained a MS degree at IST in Lisbon, Portugal. He is being advised by Krishna Gummadi.

 


2007

 

July 27, 2007:

Rodrigo Rodrigues accepts a faculty position at the institute. He will lead an independent research group on Dependable Systems. He obtained his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and joins us from the Instituto Superior Tecnico in Lisbon.

 

June 22, 2007:

Michael Backes, Professor at Saarland University, is appointed as a Max Planck Fellow at the MPI for Software Systems for five years. The new Max Planck Fellow program aims to strengthen the cooperation between Max Planck institutes and universities. In addition to his duties at the University, Michael will head a small research group on Information Security and Cryptography at the institute.

 

May 28, 2007:

Derek Dreyer accepts a position on the faculty of the institute. Derek will lead an independent research group on Type Systems and Functional Programming. He obtained his Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University and joins us from the Toyota Technological Institute at Chicago.

 

May 18, 2007:

Andrey Rybalchenko accepts a position on the faculty of the institute. Andrey will lead an independent research group on Verification Systems. He previously held a post-doctoral position with Tom Henzinger at EPFL. He is the winner of the Otto-Hahn-Medal of the Max Planck Society.

The institute is pleased to announce its

Spring 2006 Distinguished Lecture Series

All lectures take place at the Technical University Kaiserslautern and can be attended (via simultaneous videocast) on the Campus of Saarland University, Building E14, room 24 (MPI building).

 

January 24-25, 2006:

A jury chaired by renowned architect Prof. Gunther Henn evaluates fifteen drafts submitted as part of an architecture competition for the design of the institute's new buildings in Kaiserlautern and Saarbruecken. First prize is awarded to a design by the firm of Weinbrenner and Single in Nuertingen. The designs reflect a common architectural concept that fosters communication and cooperation, while each building has a distinct appearance that respects its situation within the campus of the Technical University of Kaiserslautern and Saarland University, respectively. Construction is expected to commence in 2007 and will cost about EUR 20M for both buildings.

 


2005

 

November 1, 2005:

Petr Kouznetsov joins the MPI for Software Systems as a post-doctoral researcher. Krishna Gummadi joins the faculty of the MPI for Software Systems. Krishna will lead an independent research group on Networked Systems.

 

October 1, 2005:

James Stewart joins the research support staff of the MPI for Software Systems from Rice University in Houston, TX, where he was on the research support staff in Peter Druschel's group. Alan Mislove is a doctoral student advised by Peter Druschel at Rice University, who will continue his research at the MPI for Software Systems.

 

September 22-23, 2005:

The MPI for Software Systems hosts a research strategy workshop in Kaiserslautern. The MPI presents its scientific concept and vision to a small group of internationally leading scientists in the area of software systems, who are asked to provide recommendations regarding the long-term research focus and the build-up strategy for the institute.

 

September 1, 2005:

Jeff Hoye joins the research support staff of the MPI for Software Systems. Jeff comes from Rice University in Houston, TX, where he was on the research support staff in Peter Druschel's group. Ansley Post and Andreas Haeberlen are doctoral students advised by Peter Druschel at Rice University; they will continue their research at the MPI for Software Systems.

 

August 16, 2005:

Prof. Peter Druschel, Ph.D., assumes his position as Scientific Director at the MPI for Software Systems. He had already lead the institute on a part-time basis since March, 2005.

 

August 3, 2005:

Petr Kouznetsov accepts a position as post-doctoral researcher at the MPI for Software Systems. Petr holds a M.Sc. degree in Mathematics from Saint-Peterburg Institute of Fine Mechanics and Optics, and the Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL). He will join the MPI for Software Systems in November, 2005.

 

July 12, 2005:

Krishna Gummadi, Ph.D., accepts a position on the faculty of the MPI for Software Systems as an independent researcher. This position is comparable to a tenure-track Assitant Professor position at a U.S. University. Krishna hold a B.Tech. degree from IIT Madras, and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Washington in Seattle, all in Computer Science and Engineering. Krishna has gained international recognition for his research on networked systems, as the recipient of three best paper awards at leading conferences in his area and as the main author of the most cited computer science articles in 2003 and 2004, respectively, according to citeseer. He will join the MPI for Software Systems in October, 2005.

 

June 26, 2005:

Carina Schmitt and Patrick Cernko assume their positions on the IT support staff of the MPI for Software Systems. Both hold Dipl-Inf. (Uni) degrees in Computer Science from Saarland University. Jörg Herrmann agrees to lead the IT support group on an interim and part-time basis, in addition to his duties at the Max Planck Institute for Informatics. Jörg holds a Dipl-Inf. degree in Computer Science from Saarland University and has about 20 years of experience in network support and computer system administration.

 

June 8, 2005:

Ms. Brigitta Hansen assumes the position of administrative assistant to Director Peter Druschel. Brigitta has previously served as assistant to the late Harald Ganzinger, Director at the Max Planck Institute for Informatics.

 

April 15, 2005:

The MPI for Software Systems hosts a reception to welcome Peter Druschel, the Founding Director of the Max Planck Institute for Software Systems.

 

April 1, 2005:

The MPIs for Software Systems in Kaiserslautern and Saarbruecken and the MPI for Informatics in Saarbruecken agree to form a joint administrative unit, headed by Volker Geiss, with staff in both the Kasierslautern and the Saarbruecken locations. Volker currently heads the administrative unit of the MPI for Informatics.

 

March 1, 2005:

Prof. Peter Druschel, Ph.D., accepts the position of Founding Director of the MPI for Software Systems. Peter comes from Rice University in Houston, TX, where he has spent eleven years as Assistant Professor (1994-2000), Associate Professor (2000-2002) and Full Professor (2002-) of Computer Science. Peter also spent time teaching and researching at the University of Paris VI, at Microsoft Research in Cambridge, UK, and at the Massachussets Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston. He holds a Dipl.-Ing. (FH) degree in Electrical Engineering from Fachhochschule Munich, and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science from the University of Arizona. Peter conducts research in experimental distributed systems, with a focus on self-organizing, decentralized and autonomous systems. He is the recipient of a National Science Foundation CAREER Award and an Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship.

 


2004

 

November 19, 2004:

The Senate of the Max Planck Society approves the creation of the MPI for Software Systems. The institute will be have two locations of equal scientific strenght, one on the campus of the Technical University of Kaiserslautern, and one on the campus of Saarland University in Saarbruecken.
